In a recent survey conducted by online retailers Oak Floors Online, a massive 93 per cent of participants said that they preferred to have hard wood flooring in their homes rather than carpet.
One of the main reasons given for preferring wooden flooring to carpets is that it is much easier to clean and maintain. Dirt and stains are easily wiped clean from a wooden floor, whereas removing stains from carpet can require a lot of time and elbow grease. Many times, the stain cannot be eradicated completely.
One participant said: “If you spill something [on wooden floors] it’s easily mopped up, but if you spill on carpet, it’s a nightmare trying to clean. I prefer wood simply because of the dirt and grime that carpet gathers.”
Another said: “We had a party a few months back and drinks were spilled left right and centre, but this was not a problem because [the wooden floor] was easily mopped.
“We also have a dog so her mucky feet are easily mopped off the floor.”
Another valid argument for hardwood flooring is the issue of domestic dust mites. Dust mites in the home are one of the biggest triggers of attacks in asthma sufferers, with over 85 per cent sensitive to them. Therefore, having houses completely furnished with carpet is only going to make the situation for sufferers worse by increasing their exposure to them.
Installing a hardwood floor is an excellent solution as it can be cleaned more easily, and has less potential for trapping dust and its associated mites. Also, wooden flooring lasts a lot longer than carpet, and will never go out of fashion.
